SAKURA in Japan

Hello, how are you guys doing? Cherry blossoms are in bloom here lately. I want to share about cherry blossom in Japan on this post today!

SAKURA

You probably know that Japanese people really love cherry blossom, SAKURA. So do I. SAKURA bloom from late March to April around Tokyo area every year.
There are hundreds of kinds of SAKURA in Japan. The most famous kind is SOMEIYOSHINO. You will find them literally everywhere. My favorite kinds are YAEZAKURA, KAWAZUZAKURA which have more pink color. very romantic!

OHANAMI

Before the season, Japan Meteorological Agency broadcast SAKURA forecast every week. People watch the forecast on TV and make plans for OHANAMI. OHANAMI is a kind of party. People enjoy eating and drinking with their family, friends under cherry blossom trees. It is just peaceful to hang out under full blossoms.
Hiro and I went to the nearest park to have OHANAMI three times this season. The park get crowded with people who are having OHANAMI everyday. We sat on the grass, and enjoyed meal and coffee. I took a nap there and felt happiness. Recently I saw many tourists from overseas joining OHANAMI too. I’m sure they enjoy too!

By the way do you know why Japanese people love SAKURA so much?
SAKURA has been deeply connected with Japanese culture since a long time ago. It is said that people has been held OHANAMI since Heian Period. It’s about 1,200 years ago. We can find many kinds of art which is related with SAKURA such as Kimono, folding screen, so on too. I want to share three reasons why SAKURA is be loved.

1. the beauty
SAKURA in full bloom is amazingly beautiful. There are many SAKURA trees everywhere. I don’t realize so many cherry blossom trees are plant on the streets, in the park until they bloom. After blooming, everywhere is colored pink and I feel like I am in dream.
2. season
SAKURA is related with major life event. People have big event such as graduation ceremony, entrance ceremony for school or company when the blossoms are in bloom. They start new life with SAKURA. So it is strongly connected with our memory. I feel like winter finish finally and spring come when I see its bud. I’m excited to new season, new life.
3. transitoriness
SAKURA only bloom for a very short period. Japanese people love ephemeral things. It seems to be concerned with Buddhism. I think if cherry blossom bloom year-around, people do not love it that much. Everything on the earth is finite. Sakura symbolize the ephemeral nature of life. I like to see SAKURA petals falling too. When they are gone, they looks like snow flakes.

I had such a good time SAKURA season this year. According to weather forecast, Sakura here will be gone this week becuase of heavy rain. It is sad. But it’s okay, I am looking forward to next spring!
